How It Works

Switching categories

Menu

Opens the sidebar to switch between categories (Hot Springs, Rest Stops, Rockhounding, and more) and see how many locations are in each.

🌡️

Category badge

Shows which category you're viewing and how many locations it has. Tap it to switch categories too.

Map controls

🔍

Search

Find a location by name within the current category.

Near me

Centers the map on your location and zooms in. Tap again to stop following — your manual zoom/pan won't get overridden while it's active.

🛰️

Satellite

Switches the map style between roads/terrain and satellite imagery.

🧭

Nearby

Shows every category within range of your location at once, each pin colored by its own category — not just whatever you're currently browsing. Widens the search radius automatically if nothing's close by.

Filter

Narrow down locations by features (currently available for Hot Springs, Rest Stops, Free RV Camping, and Waterfalls).

Reading the map

🟠

Colored dots

Each location, colored by category. Tap one to see its details.

🟡

Gold dots (Rockhounding only)

Gold and placer mining sites specifically, as a subset of all rockhounding locations.

Dimmed dots (Waterfalls only)

Locations we don't yet have detailed source data for. Still real, just lower-confidence — self-filters the busiest areas so the well-documented waterfalls stand out.

🟢

Dark green dots (Free RV Camping only)

National Forest campgrounds, in a darker green than the standard BLM dots — so you can tell Forest Service sites apart from BLM land at a glance. Filter by Land Type to isolate one or the other.

Blue arrow

Your current position, shown while “Near me” is active.

Location details

Rating

Average visitor rating. Shows “Not yet rated — be the first” if no one's reviewed it yet — we never make up a default score.

🔒

Safety at Night

A separate rating just for how safe a spot feels after dark — useful for solo travelers, especially when camping overnight or visiting a hot spring at odd hours.

📍

Opens the location in Google Maps or Apple Maps.

Write a Review

Leave a rating and review. Requires a free account — this is mainly to keep spam and fake reviews out.

Suggest a correction to the location's details (hours, conditions, amenities, etc.). Requires a free account, and goes through admin review before it's applied.

❤️

My Favorites

Shows every location you've favorited, across all categories at once — each one drawn as a heart colored by its category. Requires a free account.

🕐

Time filter

Narrows the favorites view to only what you've saved recently (7/30/90 days), so one trip's picks don't get buried under everything you've ever favorited.

🧭

Route These

Draws an optimized driving loop — starting from your current location — through everything showing in the favorites view, up to 12 stops at once. Shows total distance, drive time, and visit order.

🗺️

Share Trip List

Exports your favorites in route order (if you've run Route These) as two lists — share it to Notes or Reminders before you lose signal. First, a tappable link per stop that opens straight to that place's card in Apple Maps (tap + there to save it to your Library). Second, a plain coordinate list with no link — paste one line at a time into Apple Maps' own “Add Stop” search box while mid-route to add it to your active route manually. We can't automate either save step — Apple doesn't allow other apps to write into a user's Maps library or add stops to an active route.
